Company History
Mitchell & Ness Sporting Goods opened in Philadelphia in 1904. Frank P. Mitchell, a former tennis AAU wrestling champion, and Charles M. Ness, an avid golfer born in Scotland, together founded Mitchell & Ness Sporting Goods in 1904. His original shop made and hand-strung tennis racquets, and with wood imported from Scotland, custom built golf clubs. Over time, expanded their businesses, sale uniforms for local baseball and football teams. When the Philadelphia Eagles went to the young National Football League in 1933, provided the M & N jerseys teams and equipment. Mitchell & Ness Eagles' team followed up the 1963 season.
The first time that the label appeared in Mitchell & Ness uniforms major league baseball was the Philadelphia Athletics in 1938. Major League Baseball teams had stopped wearing wool flannel shirts in 1972. The teams now use double-shirts polyester fabric. Dust in a warehouse in northern Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness found rolls of flannel baseball before age 50. They were still wrapped carefully, without touching, and equal status again ready to be cut and sewn.
The flannel was sewn. The letters and patches are recreated and implemented. The shirts were completed and were put on sale. Shirts began to sell most of the night. So did the second batch of a dozen or more. Eventually, Mitchell & Ness attracted customers throughout the United States. Sports Illustrated wrote a flattering M & N, in June 1987. The New York Times wrote about the company two years later.
