I thought MJ was the greatest player of all time and that any d-league level talent is enough and he can get the best out of them, raise his and their level of play and can easily win a championship
why did he threaten to retire if Pippen was traded away? I thought Pippen was a product of Jordan and Pippen would be nothing without Jordan
so you’re telling me the lord almighty of basketball,; Michael Jordan, couldn’t win a ring without Pippen who everyone thinks is uselss without Jordan and accomplished nothing without Jordan
Have you ever heard the theory “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. Why would you want to break up team chemistry when you have something good going for you? Michael Jordan was around 34 years of age when this supposed trade was about to go through. Tracy McGrady was fresh outta high school at the time and it would have taken him at least 3-4 years to developed. Look at what happened when the Lakers traded Shaq to Miami. They missed out on a potential fourth ring and they had to endure a couple of bad seasons after that. It took a trade to land Pau Gasol and the development of Andrew Bynum just to get the Lakers back into title contention. Kobe was 26 years of age at the time and was about to hit his prime so he could afford to wait but MJ (at the age of 34) didn’t have the luxury of entering the NBA outta high school like Kobe.
If Jordan were the same age as Kobe (26 years) then it may be a gamble worth taking but this isn’t the case. Why would MJ want to waste the next few years of his career adjusting to a new teammate when he could be winning championship , which the Bulls did the following (1997-1998) season. A perfect example would be Kevin Garnett last year when he was at the age of 31. He didn’t want to start over so he accepted the trade to Boston (even though he wasn’t really comfortable with this destination) to get his 1st ring. Garnett was known to make players around him better and he was also 3 years younger than Jordan at the time of the proposed Pippen trade. Even KG didn’t have the patience to start over with younger players so why would a player with as much pride as MJ accept that?
Of course, Jordan would have taken the Bulls farther than Kobe did for the Lakers but it would have taken some time. T-Mac didn’t become the stud he is today until his fourth season and I’m not sure if Jordan had the patience to get him up to speed. It’s like going from an upper class side of society where you get to enjoy the finer things in life to the ghetto bottom cellar of poverty. It is always better to improve rather than take a step back. There is also something called a friendship bond among players that you share when you win championships together. How pissed do you think Magic Johnson (an NBA Legend who is also known to make players around him better) would be if the Lakers front office were to trade away James Worthy or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during their last few years?
I’m not going to say that Jordan didn’t need Pippen but it doesn’t hurt to have a teammate you’re familiar with day in / day in. Plus, let’s not forget that during the last NBA Finals the Bulls won against Utah (the 1997-1998 season), it was Jordan who came through for the Bulls, playing with a flu and not the other way around. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that Scottie Pippen wouldn’t have evolved into the icon he is today if he hadn’t played with MJ and exposed himself to Jordan’s intensive practice routines. Scottie probably, would have became a great player but certainly, nowhere near the 50 Greatest NBA Players of All-Time. Just my 2 cents.
