What made these basketball players grow taller than they should have?

A man generally grows around 14 years and reaches adult height at age 17, however, there seems to be some disparity with this fact among basketball players. according to the articles of Wikipedia for Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen, both rose after a significant amount when it should have: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Barkley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottie_Pippen Barkley grew about 6 inches after 17 years of age and Pippen grew 6 inches in college, surprisingly. So my question is: what caused these players to grow significantly after the normal human growth is supposed to stop? I see two possibilities: 1. excessive amounts of training caused large emissions of growth hormone (exercise increases the release of growth hormone). Even if growth plates are closed then it would have no effect. 2. Basketball somehow caused his bones to stretch despite having closed growth plates. So the explanation seems more logical?

I think back to survival, if the body has to adapt to competition will, but I believe that genes also play a role too. Few people lose interest or removed from the team before, I'm sure if they could stick with it gain a couple of inches longer.

52-Week Basketball Training (Book) 52-Week Basketball Training (Book)
$22.95

Designed for both male and female players, this book helps athletes develop the strength to set screens and convert three-point plays, the speed to run the court and get into position, the balance to change direction on a drive, the quickness to get loose balls and blow by a defender for easy baskets, and the explosive jumping power to block shots and grab rebounds. Chip Sigmon, athletic trainer for Carolinas Sports Performance Center at Carolinas Medical Center and former head strength and conditioning coach for the Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Sting, provides everything that coaches and players need to get that competitive edge and keep it year-round as they learn to: develop fitness in the off-season, improve speed and power in the preseason, maintain a high level of conditioning through the regular season, and perform at peak abilities in post season competition. 52-Week Basketball Training presents daily workouts for optimal training throughout the year so that players can withstand the rigors of the sport. Thorough explanations and detailed illustrations provide clear instruction on how to perform each of the 192 drills and exercises. By following Sigmon's year-round training program, players will become stronger, more dominant, and more confident on the court.
